The story really got me thinking about how stories like this really show that athletes are the good guys. In a world right now where tragedy and bad news is all thats covered its good to have a positive outlier. Alot of people judge athletes because they make a ton of money and deservingly so some athletes do make some really dumb decisions. ( See A-Rod and Pacman Jones) Minus a few bad apples and contrary to belief there are stories and athletes out there that really try to make a difference. For example with the recent tragice events with the Oklahoma tornadoes, Kevin Durant donated 1 million dollars to that relief fund. In Kansas City Jeff Francour took time to talk and interact with a child who was austistic and just that one moment made his day. The kids mother wrote this:

Our son stared up at you with tears in his eyes, you took the time to coddle him, ask his name, and make him feel special.

We just wanted to say thank you for not only taking the time to come over to see our son, but for signing his hat, and posing for a picture with him. It is truly a day that our son will never forget. You are a true role model, this was a day our family will always remember

Its little small acts like what these two did that restore my faith in humanity sometimes. For two professional athletes who by their own right dont have to give a dime to anything decide to do otherwise is amazing. When I was a kid athletes were my heroes and nothing could ever taint that idea. Today being a grown up knowing the things I know when it comes to cheating and extramartial affairs in sports is sometimes disheartening. To think that we live in a time where athletes are sought out as the next big scandal than the next top role model is hard to digest, but when an athlete really steps up and tries to make a difference, whether it be in one persons life like in Kansas City or many people lives like in Oklahoma it restores my faith. What I am getting at is athletes are the good guys, they are the representatives for our towns and our teams. We look up to them when times are tragic and history has shown that more times than not they have stepped up and made a difference, and a two-hundred dollar contract doesn’t change that.

Fan can't believe Matt Kemp's gesture

Fan can't believe Matt Kemp's gesture:
He had just made the final out in a city where his name is booed, his jersey is reviled, and his team had been swept.

This is a great read and a must see in my book. Its great to know there are a few athletes and people who can stop and live in the moment and make one terminally ill patients day and life.

Triumph and Tragedy

I have had the privilege in my young life to visit the city of Boston as a Red Sox fan. In that trip I was able to live any baseball fans dream and visit Fenway Park and explore the city where our history is engrained deep. The one thing I remember was walking by boylston street and having a local tell me ” Kid where your standing is where the Boston Marathon ends” That whole week I remember strangers coming up to me telling me things from nice hat to little mini history lessons about the place I was standing. The one thing that I took away from the trip was how this big city felt like a small community. It felt like you could goto any place and see someone you know or goto the local store and have a conversation with a complete stranger. The people of Boston are a resilient bunch and that resiliency was tested two days ago at the Boston Marathon. When the explosions first happened I lost my faith in humanity. I could not help but think of all the horrible things that have happened recently with Newtown and now this. There was one thing I saw that restored my faith and it was to see people not running away from the blasts but running toward them. That was the moment that I knew the city was going to be ok, it became a small community again where the health of others was more important than themselves. The city of Boston has seen tragedy and wars in its past and is still standing and this tragedy is no different. I look back and remember what that local said to me ” Kid where your standing is where the Boston Marathon ends” Two days ago it ended in tragedy but it will end again as it was intended to with success and happiness.

If there is one thing you need to know about me its that the game of baseball holds a big place in my heart. It was the game my father’s father played and hopefully the game my kids will play. It pains me sometimes to hear the criticism the game gets like it being too long or being boring at times. With that said I agree that sometimes baseball can become a chore to watch but for me I can watch it every day if given the opportunity. It’s the only sport that I know can bring fathers and sons together like it did with me and my dad. Its the only sport that I know that healed a nation after the events of September 11th. Baseball and America are tied in history and in tragedy and thats what makes it great. The simple fact that the rules havent changed in a 100 years and that baseball legends still have life to this day make it more than a institution but a pastime. So next time your watching the game remember this quote from the movie Field of Dreams:

“The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it’s a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again”

I can think of no other season in my young baseball fan career where there was so much uncertainty and excitement in baseball. This year saw a phenom that no one saw coming in the play of Mike Trout and a 40 plus year record being broken in the Miguel Cabrera triple crown. As I sit back and think about the season that was, I can only think how great was it to have the Orioles back and the A’s with there rag tag group of vets and rookies. This season saw collapses of both the Red Sox and Rangers to which the Rangers lost the division in the last few weeks of the season and the Red Sox looked like a fish out of water most of the season. We had the Nationals show their youth and pitching strength and told all of us that they are here to stay, and we saw the Cardinals come within a game of possibly going back to the world series. What I am getting at is no matter what you say or who you are there is no denying that baseball is the best sport in the country, with the youth revival of the O’s, A’s, Nats and Mike Trout this game is in great hands and I am personally excited for the next 10-20 years. I honestly think that this season and maybe the end of the last was the end of the steroid era and sparked the revival of the speed game like in the old days with Ricky Henderson. This game goes through so many phases in past generations that as a fan I am excited to be living in a time where there are heroes like Jon lester who fought cancer, Marco Scutaro who plays the game right and is currently proving his worth in the play offs, and Mike Trout the young phenom and future role model and who I think is the future new face of the MLB. Not to mention the youth movement that is becoming very prominent and was on display this post season. All these things as a fan were amazing to see and I can honestly say this was the most exciting season I have ever witnessed, and its hard to say goodbye to it but if this season is any indication of things to come I cannot wait till 2013! So on that note I bid a farewell to 2012 and I say thank you for all the great moments and memories that I can one day share to my kids.

Thank you 2012 MLB Season,

Its Fantasy Football Season and my team The Fear Boners will...

Its Fantasy Football Season and my team The Fear Boners will dominate come this monday in the draft

Well this is awkward

Sorry I neglected this blog but I was away on business for 3 months and could not find the time to write a single post but no worries I am back to the confines of my home and can now post away.

Draft Time?

In the next few days specifically on Thursday, teams from around the league will draft the future of their franchises. Unlike in fantasy football if you draft a player and they don’t pan out you always have next year, in this case if these players don’t pan out then its 10-15 years of bad football. As a football fan, I am one of those that sits for 3 days and watches his team (the patriots) make good move after good move but for other teams that is not always the case (see Ryan Leaf).

This week we have two teams who are on the down, this being the Colts and the weary Redskins who haven’t had a legitimate superstar or any positive thing to cheer about for many years now. Both these teams have a decision to make between the very talented RG3 and the NFL superstar lock that is Andrew Luck. I believe that there will be no contest that luck is picked 1st but I can honestly say that I wish it was RG3. The guy has talent that I have never seen before and has the personality that is needed to become the face of the NFL. His rocket arm and his ability to move in the pocket is what I believe sets him apart from luck, and should cement him as number 1 but I am not the one choosing.

This is the first year that I have seen the draft and thought “wow either team is getting a no bust player” and I am honestly excited to see how these two guys pan out. Who knows in 10 years we could say that these two were the best 1,2 pick in NFL Draft history. For now, both teams can only hope and pray that I am right and that the money they spend pans out to super bowls and huge ticket sales. The NFL more than any league is a ” better hope you guess right” business because one bad decision can affect you for years ( Raiders Jamarcus Russel). In some cases its the opposite and the draft can be the set up for a phenomenal story like Tom Brady who had 6 Qbs taken before him and is now one of the best QBs in the league with 3 super bowls to his name. It’s that unpredictability and excitement of the future that make draft day what it is, the most important day of the year for teams and fans alike. I know I will be watching what about you?

GO PATS!!

In light of the Bubba Post, had to post this!

In light of the Bubba Post, had to post this!

The Modern Day Athlete and The Average Joe

Its funny because I have been wanting to write a post like this since I opened this blog but I could not really find anyone who really epitomizes the modern athlete that connects to the average joe. That statement was true until this last sunday at the masters, Bubba Watson proved me wrong in all aspects as he did for his critics too. I honestly can tell you that I knew of Bubba before his masters fame but just of his antics and that he was a potential golf superstar and the future of golf, in the post tiger era. Then he won the masters and I realized that wow he might live up to his potential. Thats neither here or there, what I was looking forward to was how he would handle all the media attention that comes with winning a master tournament and I have to say this week has been a magical one that probably wont be repeated. I say that because he has handled it like any of us would. He hit twitter and answered almost everyone who thanked him, Tweeted celebrities asking them to play golf, mention his car he bought (the General Lee), Diss piers morgan on twitter, and hit the talk show circuit. As all these things were happening I could not help but think man he’s handling it like I would and I feel like Bubba is one of the guys. Then it it hit me he’s the modern athlete that can relate to the average joe, and that ability to do that is one that will not only build him a huge fan base but make people respect him more. He gives the vibe that fame doesn’t count but its cool to have it, he never forgets where he came from and he’s just being himself. To see that gap between athlete and average joe being bridged is an exciting time because we have a guy who is like one of us but yet doing extraordinary things. I wish I was a kid because I would want Bubba as my role model and I can honestly say that Bubba is the future of the modern day athlete. Golf is in an exciting time of change right now and I cant wait to see the next tournament Bubba is in…. I know I will be watching, how about you?

VIDEO OF THE DAY!
